7 Small Fridge Checks That Help Food Last Longer

    by Nora Jaymes

Nothing ruins a good grocery haul faster than finding wilted greens, mystery leftovers, or a fridge shelf that feels colder in one spot than another. The good news? A refrigerator reset doesn’t need to be a full cleanout or a big project.

That’s why our experts at Livingood's Appliances & Bedding put together a quick checklist you can use every month or so to keep your fridge easier to organize, easier to use, and better at keeping food fresh.

    Confirm the Temperature Setting

Your refrigerator and freezer should be set to the right temperatures. For most homes, the refrigerator should be around 37°F to 39°F, and the freezer should be around 0°F.

It’s a small step, but it makes a difference. When the temperature is in the sweet spot, the fridge works better and your food stands a better chance of staying fresh until you’re ready for it.

    Clear the Airflow Vents

Take a look at the vents and clear away any food containers, bags, or tall items that may be covering them. Cool air needs room to move through the refrigerator, especially around the back and sides.

If items are pushed tight against the vents, shift them forward or move them to another shelf. A bit of breathing room helps the fridge cool more evenly from top to bottom.

A thermometer takes the temperature of the fridge.

    Give Shelves Some Breathing Room

Your shelves can be full, but they shouldn’t be packed tightly. A stocked fridge is fine, but food should not be crammed in so closely that cold air has nowhere to move.

Sliding a few things forward, grouping similar foods, and clearing out those old leftovers in the back can help. We’re not aiming for a magazine-worthy fridge, just one that’s easy to see, easy to use, and cools like it should.

    Sort the Door Storage

The fridge door is usually the warmest spot, since it gets a blast of room air every time you open it. It’s best for things that don’t mind a little temperature swing.

Condiments, dressings, and drinks are usually happy on the door. Milk, eggs, and anything that needs steady cold are better off on the main shelves.

    Adjust the Produce Drawers

Take a quick look at how your produce drawers are set up for the fruits and vegetables you actually buy. If your drawers have humidity controls, use them to help keep produce fresher for longer.

Leafy greens and most veggies like a bit more humidity. Fruits that ripen and give off gas, like apples or pears, are happier when they’re kept away from delicate veggies if you can swing it.

    Bring Older Items Forward

Older leftovers, open jars, and half-used ingredients should be easy to see. When these items get pushed to the back, they are more likely to be forgotten until they are no longer usable.

Anything that needs to be used soon can move to the front. If something’s clearly past its prime, it’s time to say goodbye.

Grouping similar open items together makes it easier to scan the fridge before meals or grocery runs.

    Look Over the Door Seal

The refrigerator door should close fully and seal tightly. Even a small gap can let cool air escape, which makes the fridge work harder than it needs to.

Sometimes a container, drawer, or bulky package is the culprit. A quick look can help you spot anything blocking the door, and a glance at the seal can show whether it’s sitting flat against the frame.

    Keep the Freshness Going

A quick fridge reset is one of those little habits that can make the whole kitchen feel a bit more manageable. Less digging, fewer mystery containers, and a better chance that the food you bought actually gets used.
